Meet our Instructors

Woodwinds

 

-Steve Bunch
(Woodwind / Brass Instructor)

Steve is an accomplished band director with over 17 years of music education experience. He currently serves as Assistant Band Director at Ennis Junior High; a position which he has held for 9 years. Prior to working at Ennis Junior High Steve has served on the director team at Ennis High School, Permenter Middle School (Cedar Hill), Beltline Intermediate School (Cedar Hill), and Mount Pleasant ISD. He has earned his Masters Degree in Music Performance and Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Texas A&M – Commerce. While attending Texas A&M- Commerce Steve sat 1st chair of clarinet from 1992-1996 and from 1998 -2000. He has performed with the Wind Ensemble at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention and at the College Band Directors National Association.

 

While at Ennis Junior High Steve has conducted the Symphonic 1 Band and assisted with the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic 2 Bands. Under his direction his bands have received numerous sweepstakes awards from UIL performances. Additionally, his bands have received superior ratings at the Beach Within Reach Festival, Soundpost Music Festival, and Peak Music Festivals.

 

Steve is a member for the First Baptist Church of Dallas Orchestra where he currently plays clarinet. He has also performed with the Carrolton Wind Symphony from 2004-2010. Steve lives in Cedar Hill with his wife Kristy and sons Caden, Carson, Cohen, and daughter Kyle.

-Rick Weathersby
(Brass Instructor)
Rick  is an accomplished professional musician as well as music educator. His expereince includes 32 years of educating with instruction from Collegiate Level Jazz Band to High School Level Band. He has performed as a clinician and guest artist for several 4A and 5A Jazz Bands, and served as an Director on the Middle School Level as well.

-Chaz Mangan

(Guitar / Bass / Ukulele / Drum Instructor)

Chaz has been an excellent addition to our Instructor Team. Chaz carries not only a wealth of music knowledge but a fun and energetic presence in engaging his students. Chaz grew up in Waxahachie and has  performed with several bands. He started his journey in music as  a child and he continues to perform with local groups still today. Chaz offers lessons in Guitar, Bass, Ukulele and Drum Instruction and works well with students of all ages.

He started his journey in music as  a child and he continues to perform with local groups still today. Chaz offers lessons in Guitar, Bass and Ukulele Instruction and works well with students of all ages.

-Taylor Nowell

(Guitar / Bass Instructor)

Taylor offers instruction on guitar and bass. He has taught for 4 years in Waco, TX  with 
Lonestar Music. After moving to the Red Oak area in 2003 he began his teaching career with Ellis 
County Music Center.

Taylor has studied music in Waco, at McLennan Community College from 1998-2002 where he
received a degree in Commercial Music Guitar Performance as well as Commercial Music Audio 
Technology. He began playing music at the age of 8 by joining the school band where he played 
alto sax. He continued in band to the age of 18. He received his first guitar at 15, and learned to 
play bass in college.

Taylor has studied many styles of music, and has played in several bands. His college band, 
Room 101, played with many acts including Days of New, Fair to Midland, and the Feds. Taylor 
has performed with members of Wade Bowen's band, and Stoney Larue's band. He has logged 
hundred of hours in studios all across Texas.

 

-Bernhard Kainerstorfer
(Violin & Viola Instructor)
Bernhard is an experienced violin and viola instructor and has taught children and adults of all ages. He has freelanced in various classical ensembles as a professional violinist. Additionally, he has held several classical performances in churches throughout Vienna, Linz, Munich and other European cities. Bernhard fluently speaks both English and German. Bernhard joined Ellis County Music Center in early 2013, and has had extensive instructor experience with Music & Arts, Bernhard's Violin Education Services, Landesmusikschule, and Musikschulverband.

-Alexis Whitaker

(Violin & Piano Instructor)

Alexis began her private musical instruction career 2013 in California where she also led worship 
services as Music Paster at her church. Her primary instrutment is Violin and has also optained 
her Bachelor's Degree in Music Ministries with a specialization in Piano in 2011. Her solid 
background and education in music has led her to continue instruction today in  North Texas.

-Lisa King
(Piano Instructor)
Lisa has maintained a private piano studio since 1983.  Lisa attended and graduated from BJU in Greenville, SC, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Pedagogy.  She originally taught at the Brook Mays Red Bird store and then in 1990 in her home.  From 1994 to 2004, she also taught at the First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie Music Academy.  Her students regularly enter and win awards at DSMTA events, the Gillock Competition, Dallas Piano Solo Competition, Dallas Federation of Junior Music Clubs, and TFMC/NFMC Junior Festivals and State Festival Competitions. In addition to her teaching, Lisa has served as accompanist for Kenwood Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Grand Prairie, weddings, parties, recitals, and UIL contests.  Lisa has eagerly invested her time in professional music organizations.  As a member of DSMTA, Lisa worked in numerous capacities.  She served in the offices of President (2003-2005), Treasurer, Secretary, and Parliamentarian; as chair of the following committees: Yearbook, Student Affiliate, Newsletter, Constitution/Bylaws, Code of Ethics, Membership/Referral, Courtesy, and Senior Musician/Scholarship; event chairperson of Jazz/Pop Contest, Costume Recital, Holiday Recitals; and, ensemble director.  She also served TMTA as the head theory grader for the 4th grade Theory Exams.  She has been an active leader in Dallas Federation of Junior Music Clubs and Texas Federation of Music Clubs having served as Counselor and Treasurer.  Her expertise is also utilized as Judge for Carrollton MTA and TFMC Junior Festivals.  Lisa joined the staff of Ellis County Music Center in 2013. In addition to spending time with her husband, Charles, Lisa loves her cats and often can be seen giving aid to feral cats in the neighborhood.  Lisa also enjoys reading, history, watching dancing, old movies, musicals, looking at art (especially Impressionistic), poetry, animals, wine, and chocolate.

-Jeremy McKissick

(Piano / Vocal Instructor)

Jeremy has come to Ellis County Music Center with over 25 years of experience in Piano performance in a House of Worship setting. Additionally, he has performed for over 8 years as a touring professional musician. This experience coupled with the fact that Jeremy is also a certified teacher in music makes him a great addition to the instruction staff.  Jeremy instructs various styles of performance including: traditional piano, church/gospel, improvisation, and general chord chart reading.
